“Under the Shadow of Venus”: About The Exhibition

María José Lavín, Mexican sculptor and visual artist, explores the female body as a territory of infinite creativity, one that has been idealized and represented throughout the history of art for centuries. Through her work, the artist seems to draw in the air with landscape-like and transgressive consonances, performative and three-dimensional forms, and poetic filaments that levitate between heaven and earth.

The artist presents a selection of works from her artistic projects "Sueños a la carta" and "Territorios de piel", revealing the enigmatic nakedness of a postmodern Venus as a symptom of the contemporary void. Mysterious amorphous bodies are unveiled before us: organless forms, faceless fragments through which the artist subverts the myth. The voyeur observes the suspended pieces and their shadow, awakening their own shadow, and ours.

About The Artist: María José Lavín

María José Lavín was born in Mexico City in 1957. She is a visual artist whose work has been exhibited in Mexico, Houston, New York, San Diego, Spain, Vienna, and Washington. She studied at the Academy of San Carlos, ENAP.

She received a residency grant at the workshop of the Félix Llopis Foundation and the Carolina Foundation in Spain, as well as a residency at CASo, founded by Francisco Toledo.

In 2014, she presented the exhibition Territorios de piel through INBA at the José Luis Cuevas Museum, which later traveled to several museums in Mexico. She has been part of the National System of Art Creators, SNCA, in its 2012 and 2017 editions. In 2022, she presented the exhibition Sueños a la carta, and in February 2025, she participated in Zona Maco in Mexico City.
