Considered one of the ten most powerful women in Mexico by Forbes magazine on multiple occasions, Elisa Carrillo is an outstanding international ballet dancer hailing from the state of Mexico.
"When my feet dance, Mexico dances." is the powerful phrase she repeats to demonstrate her love and passion for dance and her country.
Elisa began her career at a very young age, starting at five. When she saw a live performance, she fell completely in love with the world of dance and knew she wanted to be a part of it. She has never doubted the decision she made.
She started as a dancer, studying at the National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance. At 14, she was accepted into The English National Ballet School in London. Later, she joined the Staatsballett Berlin in Germany and became a principal dancer.
After receiving a scholarship to study at the English National Ballet School in London, this 14-year-old embarked on her first journey to Europe with basic knowledge of English, leaving her family in Mexico and all the previous expectations she had about the world of dance behind.
"When I arrived in London, I was in unfamiliar territory, not knowing what lay ahead. I had to learn to be strong and stand out on my own among so many other young people who shared my aspirations," she recalls.
It was in that city where ballet would become her lifelong passion. Over time, Elisa was admitted to the Staatsballett Berlin, becoming the first Mexican to win the Benois de la Danse in 2019, considered the "Oscar" of dance, for her interpretation of Juliet in Nacho Duato's "Romeo and Juliet."
Genuinely, she tells us that she wouldn't have achieved all of this without Mexico, as her love for her roots and her passion have kept her fighting for her dreams.
Above all, whatever you do, do it with all your love. When there is true love and a desire to achieve something, you will find the strength and motivation to break any barrier and reach great heights.
Elisa speaks four languages: Spanish, English, German, Russian, and Italian. She has taught dance classes in Mexico, Canada, the USA, and Germany.
She is the only Mexican and the first Latin American in history to have received the three most prestigious awards worldwide in the field of dance:
Currently, she holds the role of Prima Ballerina at the Staatsballett Berlin, one of the top ten ballet companies in the world.
Elisa, proud of Mexico, she has been a cultural ambassador since 2010. The government of the State of Mexico established the "Elisa Carrillo Cabrera Scholarship" in her honor to support more girls who, like Elisa, make ballet their way of life. "Since 2012, these scholarships aim to make our State of Mexico a platform for development, coexistence, and love for the performing arts," says the Secretary of Culture and Tourism.
Her most recent recognition this year was being named Ambassador of Mexican Cities World Heritage Sites on March 7th during a ceremony held at the ITB Berlin, the world's largest tourism fair. This title was awarded to her by the National Association of Mexican Cities World Heritage Sites in recognition of her outstanding contribution to promoting Mexican cities that are World Heritage Sites.
