Textile art in Mexico is an activity that represents miscegenation customs and traditions. Through its diversity of textures and colors creatively applied in Mexican textile craftsmanship, weavers and embroiderers of the ethnic groups inhabit every corner of the country.

This is why Mexico is known for its beautifully composed textile art. In this article, you will learn about some Mexican textile crafts and where to find them.

1.- Yucatán


In the Yucatan peninsula, there are villages of the Mayan ethnic group that still preserve pre-Hispanic textile techniques. The garments are made with handmade cotton fabrics such as belts, blouses, which are of different colors. Being characteristic of their designs use of colorful flowers and nature. Many of these decorations can still be found in the Yucatán Peninsula.

2.- Veracruz

The garments produced in this state are mostly made of cotton and sheep wool. These materials once turned into thread, are dyed with pigments derived from flowers, plants, or minerals.

Later they are woven in waist loom, thus creating blankets in colorful designs. The result is beautiful garments with floral embroidery, tangles, quesquemes, sarapes.

3.- Chiapas

Textile art of Chiapas is designed by colors before-mentioned as blue, purple, green, and red. They embody a very colorful design embroidered on blankets woven on a backstrap loom to make pillows, dresses, shawls, blouses, and many other pieces.

Embroidery has a deep meaning for these communities. In the embroidery, we can see flowers, ceiba trees (which according to Mayan beliefs represent the tree of life), animals such as birds, monkeys, and frogs with the call of rain that is done in a traditional way.

4.- Oaxaca

The textile crafts produced in Oaxaca have a wide diversity of styles due to their great ethnic richness. Each piece has a unique design with cotton, wool, or silk.

The ethnic communities make their textiles with a backstrap loom, some of them also, the distaff is still used for spinning. The natural dyes are manufactured with insects such as cochineal, indigo, and purple snail to dye fabrics. The foil waves have decorations that involve a wide range of materials, representing pre-Hispanic origin, nature, and animals.

5.- SAN LUIS POTOSÍ 

One of the most representative and garments of the textile craft produced in San Luis Potosí is the dhayemlaab. Created by the ethnic group tenak, famous for its embroidery on accessories with the technique of cross-stitching.

The cotton threads or stamens most commonly used in this state are pink, orange, red, green, and azure. They have decorative motifs that are mostly representations of animals and plants of the region, as well as the so-called trees of life and the dual-armed cross covered with flowers.

6.- Guerrero

As in the aforementioned states, in the ethnic groups that inhabit the territory of Guerrero. There is an ancestral textile tradition preserved and transmitted from generation to generation by the women of these peoples.

This custom consists of the weaving and embroidery of huipiles decorated primarily with traditional brocades in the form of “polsas”, juxtaposed geometric figures and flowers of the corn milpa.

7.- Michoacán

In Michoacan, the textile craft is worked in the waist loom and pedal loom of European origin, using raw material cotton and wool. Those fabrics with which they design overcoats, blankets, backpacks, belts, and thick fabrics decorated with grecas, birds, and flowers.

8.- Nayarit   

The wixarika or Huichol ethnic group, settled in the mountainous part of this state, stands out for its showy clothing and sophisticated embroidery in manta quadrille.

The garments are decorated with a thread of various colors, mainly red, pink, and blue, with figures of animals such as birds, deer, flowers, and rhomboids, which according to their beliefs evoke the eye of God.
