A second chance for the turtles of Riviera Maya
We have good news for you! One of our most loved turtles of the Turtle Hospital in Xcaret, Maya, finally rehabilitated and returned to the sea a few days ago.
Maya’s story is impressive, last year when she arrived to nest on the beaches of Sian Ka’an Nature Reserve in the state of Quintana Roo, she was victim of a jaguar attack. When she arrived to the Turtle Hospital, she had injuries on the right side of the head, a partial jaw fracture and other injuries to the left eyelid.
In an interview, Ana Cecilia Negrete, Vet of the Turtle Hospital of Xcaret explained that Maya was treated with daily antiseptic washes based solutions and honey bee was applied. Due to the extensive damage caused by the jaguar, Maya lost her right eye and maxilla, but had a remarkable recovery from the adjacent tissues.
Finally, after intensive treatment and care, Maya returned to the sea and she is ready to continue her long sea turtle life, hoping to continue the reproduction cycle. We hope to receive her back again on these beaches to nest in the next season.
