After living for 25 years in Cancun, I’ve been a witness of the fast-growing number of tourists and infrastructure in the destiny over the past years. Now, it has more than 400 hotels and more than 40,000 hotel rooms. A regular question between the people that visit this beautiful place is the difference between Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
If you have visited neither of both, it might be a little complicated to understand the difference. But, don’t worry, I will explain to you the most important things you have to know when planning your next vacations to Cancun or the Riviera Maya.
The Riviera Maya is a touristic destination located 18.6 miles on the south of Cancun, part of the Quintana Roo state. It goes from Isla Blanca (to the north) down to Punta Allen (on the south).

How to get to the Riviera Maya?
The closest airport to the Riviera Maya is the International Cancun Airport (20 minutes away by car). Moving around the Riviera Maya is very simple. Its main road goes from Cancun up to the city of Chetumal. You could either take the public transportation, rent a car or book service transportation with your hotel.

The Riviera Maya has many different aspects of interest that go from archeological sites, Theme Parks, beaches and places where you can just surround yourself with nature and disconnect from the world.
