After living for 25 years in Cancun, I’ve been a witness of the fast-growing number of tourists and infrastructure in the destiny over the past years. Now, it has more than 400 hotels and more than 40,000 hotel rooms. A regular question between the people that visit this beautiful place is the difference between Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

If you have visited neither of both, it might be a little complicated to understand the difference. But, don’t worry, I will explain to you the most important things you have to know when planning your next vacation to Cancun or the Riviera Maya.

The Riviera Maya is a tourist destination located 18.6 miles south of Cancun, part of the Quintana Roo state. It goes from Isla Blanca (to the north) down to Punta Allen (on the south).
