Cancun is one of the most important tourist destinations in Mexico, and it’s also one of the youngest cities in the country. It is less than 50 years old to have been founded, and part of its charm lies in that. Since it hides many curious or little-known facts about its history that we are going to tell you today.

1.- Cancun is an island!
At the beginning of its history, the island of Cancun was separated from the country, until the Calinda and Nizuc bridges were built. Those bridges were built of wood and connected the island with the rest of Mexico. We recommend you go up to the Scenic Tower to see the island of Cancun in all its splendor from the heights.

2.- A city built by Mexicans for Mexicans
The urban layout of the city of Cancun, as well as its planning, was designed by the architects Mario Pani as well as the Landa Verdugo brothers. In fact, Mario Pani was responsible for creating Ciudad Satelite in Mexico City. Part of the planning of the city forced the inhabitants to leave 17 feet in the front as well as 10 feet on the sides and in the back of their homes, this to have open spaces between the buildings and help oxygenation of the parks.

3.- The Mayans lived in Cancun

4.- A city with its own identity
Cancun is a unique city in Mexico, where there was no European influence or from any other country for its foundation. That is why we do not have a church in the center or colonial architecture as it happens in other parts of the Yucatan Peninsula like in Merida or Valladolid.

5.- It’s a nest of snakes or maybe not
The meaning of the word “Cancun” has many theories, the most accepted until today is “nest of snakes” but many experts believe that this name originated in the seventies due to internal political situations in the country and because of which Cancun was compared with a nest of snakes, that was the reason that meaning was adopted.
