Riviera Maya parks selected by the United Nations due to their sustainable practices

• It is living proof that it is possible to be successful and innovative in tourism while maintaining, preserving, and promoting our heritage.

• Through the United Nations Knowledge Network it will share experiences in order to achieve responsible and sustainable tourism that is accessible to all.

Within the framework of the Second Forum of the UNWTO Knowledge Network, Experiencias Xcaret group shared the good practices it has developed in the past 23 years in sustainable tourism.

The Legacy Projects Coordinator at Experiencias Xcaret, Carlos Serrano Cerrillo, presented to the assembly the case that won this Mexican group the 2012 UNWTO Ulysses Award for excellence and innovation in enterprises.
Serrano Cerrillo explained that Experiencias Xcaret, through its Riviera Maya nature parks, is a model of good practices in sustainable tourist entertainment because it has proven that it is possible to be successful and innovative in tourism while at the same time maintaining, preserving, and promoting care and respect for natural resources and cultural heritage.

He pointed out that this has been possible due to constant innovation in products and services; good practices to safeguard our Natural and Cultural Heritage, as well the model it has developed for sustainable operations and corporate social responsibility.

Serrano Cerrillo explained that at Experiencias Xcaret innovation can be seen in the following areas: New and attractive products; the creation of a unique added value in the staff that looks after our visitors; the process of creating audiences and interpreting our legacy; landscaping and the process of launching an integral model of regional tourist development through the Gran Peninsula Maya Project.

Among the groups, experiences are Xcaret Park, Xel-Ha, Xplor and the group’s new products: Xenotes (a tour to visit sinkholes), Xplor Fuego (adventure tourism), and Xichen (tours to archaeological sites, natural reserves, and colonial cities), as well as Xoximilco (a cruise in traditional Mexican barges called trajineras).

In regards to safeguarding our cultural heritage, there are attractions that create awareness about the cultural treasures of Mexico: Mariachi music, the Pirecua, The Ritual Ceremony of the Voladores (flying men), the dance of the Parachicos, Mexican cuisine, and the indigenous celebrations in honor of the dead. Millenary traditions from Mesoamerica are also recreated, including the Sacred Mayan Journey, pre-Hispanic dances and the pre-Hispanic Ball Game, and every day of the year, the new stage presentation Xcaret Mexico Espectacular is presented bringing together songs, music, and dance from the different cultural regions of the country.

In regards to the natural heritage, it is important to remember that the group, through Xcaret Park, boasts more than 20 years of hard work in reproduction programs for native plant species as well as endangered species such as marine turtles, jaguars, flamingos, red macaws, parrots, toucans, catsharks and tapirs, among others.

As a model of sustainable tourism, we pride ourselves in environmental care actions and the fulfillment of the guidelines of international certifications with the highest standards in this field. The environmental education programs, the use of chemical-free sunscreens, the integral management of solid waste, integral water management, the use of solar heaters, composting, and beach cleaning programs, among others, are also examples of good practices due to their consistency and impact.

Experiencias Xcaret adheres to its commitments as a signee of the Earth Charter and Global Compact; follows its initiatives with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for climate change, as a holder of the Earth Check international sustainable tourism certification and as a Socially Responsible Enterprise (SRE).
