A little paradise called Akumal
Akumal is a micro tourist destination that retains its natural charm. Known as a turtle place, since you can immerse yourself in the water and find specimens of this fascinating species around you. Prepare your snorkel and enjoy this incredible underwater landscape.
Being a place where turtles inhabit, they choose this bay to nest and spawn during certain seasons of the year.
Watching their arrival is an incredible experience. The experienced volunteers who care for their nests share some valuable instructions to tourists and bystanders in order to be very respectful to the species. There are specific rules that we must follow to enjoy this wonderful manifestation of Mother Earth.
Akumal beach is the main attraction with the different shades of blue and its soft sand.
I highly recommend that you walk along the shore and enjoy the scenery, many people who visit this place love to do it. Plus, let me tell you that it’s also home to some of the best sunrises and sunsets I’ve ever seen.
If you are more of an adventurer yourself, there are many options for water activities such as snorkeling, diving, and swimming. These are especially famous due to the marine fauna of Akumal, known as an entrance to the depths of the Caribbean Sea. Also, there are other types of activities, including windsurfing and kayaking or biking, there is something for everyone. It is essential to consider that all of them have cost.
Which sites are most worth visiting?
Akumal is 105 km from Cancun and 37 km from Playa del Carmen.
From Cancun, you can head south on federal highway 307 Cancun – Chetumal until you find the diverting point to reach this heavenly destination.
1. Caleta de Xaac
The most favorable conditions for swimming and sharing with the natural kinds of the place, ideal to see a variety of fishes in their habitat and enjoy the tranquility and peace that abounds in these places.
In the Xaac cove, there is a Maya shrine on a rock island.
2. Tour the town
Across the road is the town of Akumal, one of the most attractive places that the destination has.
Its citizens and take care and preserve the area. At some places like restaurants where you can take Mayan language classes!
Learning some essential words is an amazing way to understand more about the culture of the place.

3. Yal-Ku Park
Yal-Ku Park is 2 km north of the town. In Yal-Ku cove, there is a freshwater eye in its rocky area, home to a large number of colorful tropical fish that live far away from predators.
This beautiful lagoon will leave you breathless. If you like hidden places, with few people and abundant nature, Yal-Ku will fascinate you.
Here, you can enjoy a day full of peace and different shades of blue with abundant marine fauna. Also, you will tour a sculptural garden around private palapas overlooking the creek and hammocks so you can rest after enjoying its crystalline waters.
Finally, you can find many options on the menu for its restaurant with something for every taste. Take advantage and try everything you can, your stomach will thank you.
4. Half Moon Bay
Half Moon Bay is the perfect spot to snorkel in Akumal with its corals and much marine fauna. The sunset in this bay is spectacular, ready your camera to capture it!
I recommend bringing water shoes so you can go swimming without any discomfort.

A coral reef that forms amazing underwater gardens protects this beautiful bay. Take the opportunity to know a magical place and learn more about the beauties that Mexico offers.
6. Cenote Azul
Cenote Azul looks like an open-air natural pool in the Riviera Maya, which is 25 minutes from Playa del Carmen. A very relaxing place to enjoy with your family, hidden in the jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula. The blue cenote is one of the main cenotes near Akumal Bay.
7. Akumal Ecological Center
You can visit the Akumal Ecological Center to create ecological awareness.
Being the place chosen by the turtles to spawn each year, ecological culture must be raised to preserve this beautiful species and the places where they carry their eggs.
8. Aktun Chen
The Aktun Chen Natural Park, whose name means cave with cenote, has an area of 400 hectares, located 4 km south of the town. The place offers a variety of attractions in the middle of nature, without breaking its balance.
You can watch animals in their natural environment and swim the main attraction of the park: the cenote.
