Learn about the new cenote that you can visit in Tour Xichen Deluxe

Discover this new cenote that’s is close to Chichen Itza

A new attraction of the Xichen Deluxe Tour that you cannot miss. Visit to the most beautiful cenote in Yucatán, Cenote Tsukán. This is the first of the three stops you will make on the Tour, a magical cenote, a Wonder of the World, and an exquisite culinary experience in a colonial town.

Cenote Tsukán is named after the serpent that protects the Mayan waters. Do not worry, the only animals you will see are little fish. The dzonoot or cenotes were sacred places for the Mayans. It is said that they were considered passages to hell. Today they are a natural attraction of our country.

This is one of the 8 thousand cenotes that exist in the Yucatan Peninsula, which has the largest network of underground rivers in the world. These types of underground water bodies are common in this area of the country because the soil is made of limestone and allows water filtration. If you come to the south of Mexico it is essential that you visit one of the magnificent cenotes and which is better than the Tsúkan Cenote.

Here are six tips that can help you visit the most beautiful cenote in Yucatán, Tsukán, and live your experience to the fullest.

Tip #1: Do not wear sunscreen

You read it right, do not wear sunscreen. The cenotes are underground bodies of pure water. These serve as a water supply for nearby Mayan communities. So we should not contaminate the water with any type of sunscreen, cream, or makeup.

In fact, the first thing you have to do before getting into Cenote Tsukán is to take a cold shower. This is to cleanse any impurities or creams that are on your body, including the sunscreen. Therefore, I recommend you put it on after swimming in the cenote. Because in the rest of the Xichen Deluxe Tour it is kind of necessary.

Tip #2: Wear your life jacket

More than a recommendation, the use of a life jacket is to respect the rules. I remind you that some cenotes are very deep. In this case the Cenote Tsukan is around 54 to 58 meters deep.

As you can see the cenote is pretty deep. You need to go down 125 steps to get underground. Of course, it is very safe to swim, but do not forget your life jacket to be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

Tip #3: Do not forget your towel

Cenote Tsukán has many amenities, restrooms, showers and you can even rent lockers. One thing that you cannot forget if you plan to swim in this majestic cenote is your towel. Being an underground body of water I can assure you that the water is super cold. So a towel to dry yourself is one hundred percent necessary.

Let me remind you that the Cenote Tsukán is the first stop on the Xichen Deluxe Tour. So there is still the visit to Chichen Itza and the restaurant in Valladolid. If you want you can bring a change of clothes. Truly, it is essential to bring a towel so you do not get wet for the rest of your adventure.

Tip #4: Visit the Mayan workshops

If you are one of those who do not like deep waters, do not worry. This cenote has different workshops in which you can participate while others cool off in the waters of the Cenote Tsukán.

Roam the Mayan village to learn how to make tortillas by hand. Participate in a Mayan ritual and enjoy the plants that surround this beautiful place. You can also prepare recado, an essential condiment in Yucatecan cuisine.

Tip #5: Manage your time

You can only spend about an hour in the cenote, which sounds like a lot but it really isn’t. Manage your time to know how quickly you have to change. How much time are you going to dedicate to the photos and how much will you be swimming in the cenote?

Listen carefully to the time that your guide tells you to return to the truck and measure your times. You can enjoy everything that Cenote Tsukán offers you if you plan it well.

Tip #6: Have fun and take lots of photos!

It is a magical place, where I assure you that you will have a wonderful experience. If you can, take your camera or your cell phone to take as many pictures as you want. I promise you that everything you capture will serve as a nice memory.

The water may be a bit cold at first but you get used to it. Relax and get in touch with nature. Swimming in a cenote as beautiful as Cenote Tsukán is a unique experience. Enjoy it to the fullest!
