Art is the soul of Hotel Xcaret Arte, a homage to the traditions and creativity that make Mexico unique. In 2024, the hotel became a canvas filled with exciting exhibitions. These displays connected guests to the heart of Mexican art. From large sculptures to works that explore modern identity, here is a look at the exhibitions that stood out this year.
1. Echoes of the Body.
The exhibition “Echoes of the Body” at Hotel Xcaret Arte celebrated 60 years of Arnaldo Coen's career. He is a key div of the Rupture Generation. This exhibition let attendees dive into his artistic world. Female torsos were used to explore deep philosophical and aesthetic ideas.
The main artwork, “What Opens Another Mystery,” created a fascinating display of movement and balance. It challenged old ideas about art and how we see the body. The female torsos showed the link between the body and the ideas of thought and emotion. This created a space that encouraged everyone to reflect and think deeply.
2. Balam, Guardian of the Starry Nights.
Hotel Xcaret Arte welcomed Mr. Jaguar, protector of the sun, the moon, the water and our mother Earth. Since ancient times, the jaguar has fascinated native peoples. Its importance is not just biological but also cultural.
The Tozontajal women from Amatenango del Valle, Chiapas, are known for their pottery. In the Tzeltal language, their name means "potters." They shape clay into jaguars to honor and worship them. In their skin, they bring to mind their nightly dreams. They also recall the Mayan creation myth. This myth tells how the gods made the first Balam parents from corn dough.
One talented potter is Juana Gómez Martínez. She is a master craftswoman. Juana has spent her life preserving and sharing traditional pottery techniques. Juana creates pieces full of symbolism. She has also taught new generations. This helps keep the artistic and cultural legacy alive. Her jaguars are known for their detail and expression. They show a living link to the history and spirit of her people.
3. The Dark Night of Siqueiros.
The exhibition featured 15 copies of original drawings. The famous muralist created these while he was in El Palacio Negro, a remand prison in Lecumberri. He was there from 1960 to 1964.
Accompanying this series were images captured by City Photographer Héctor García, who documented Siqueiros' life during those years. In these photographs, guests were able to delve into the disturbing atmosphere that surrounded the artist. Siqueiros, at the age of 63, was imprisoned for the alleged crime of social dissolution. Although he was sentenced two years later, he was released before serving the eight years imposed, thanks to a presidential pardon.
This collection is an important part of our artistic heritage. It highlights the work of one of our best painters. He is known worldwide, especially for being a muralist who went beyond our borders. His work boosts Mexico's artistic identity. Each stroke shows the strength of our nation. He focuses on the people as the main part of his art.
4. Pilgrim Virgins.
Twelve sculptures of Virgins were made by 35 artists from the Special Projects area of Grupo Xcaret. This group includes art graduates, skilled artisans, self-taught artists, and master masons. They are united by their passion to create pieces that have high aesthetic and symbolic value.
This project is for the Xibalba Reserve, near Valladolid. Its goal is to install many Virgins from the area inside a hand-carved subway cathedral. Its design aims to balance the unique features of various depictions of the Virgin Mary. It also connects with Mexican roots and culture. This design moves away from European representations.
5. Kurpites: Those who come together.
The Kurpites are an important tradition in Michoacán. They play a key role in the celebrations for San Juan Bautista and the Virgin of Guadalupe. This ritual dance is done by young unmarried men called “Kurpites.” Their movements are full of energy. The costumes they wear are richly hand-embroidered.
In this exhibition, we highlight the fusion of music, dance and textile art that defines this tradition. The costumes of the Kurpites are real works of art. They are made with great care and detail. The embroidery tells stories of identity and faith. The dance, with the lively sound of violins and guitars, shows the deep bond that connects people across generations.
This exhibition honored the rich culture of Michoacán. It celebrated the creativity of its artisans, who keep this unique tradition alive.
