Discover the story behind the dress exhibited at the boutique hotel La Casa de Playa during the Festival of Life and Death Traditions at Xcaret and the designer who created it.
Lorena Saravia, an eminent Mexican designer, has made an indelible mark on the fashion world with her prodigious creativity and ingenuity. With over a decade of experience in the industry, Saravia has conceived fashion collections that have dazzled on the most prestigious runways in Mexico and abroad.
Lorena studied fashion design at the "Felicidad Duce" University in Barcelona, Spain. Before establishing her own brand, she worked and collaborated with prominent fashion firms such as:
Bread and Butter Barcelona
Gstar-Raw
The famous designer Macario Jiménez
Her creations have shone at renowned events like the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Mexico, New York Fashion Week, and Miami Fashion Week.
Her style is known for its elegance, simplicity, and sophistication, merging classic silhouettes with avant-garde touches and the use of the highest-quality materials.
This dress is a work of art that represents Lorena's interpretation of the Day of the Dead, the most important tradition in Mexico. It was created as part of a collaboration between Lorena, Vogue, and the Festival of Life and Death Traditions at Xcaret.
One of the elements that inspired Lorena in this creative process was La Catrina, a Mexican icon that, from her perspective, is constructed in various forms. She sees it as the interpretation of different women throughout Mexican history, and from there, they gave structure to the dress.
Another element from the Day of the Dead that served as inspiration was the Marigold flower (Cempasúchil). Although they chose to innovate and select a different color palette, the dress features a hand-painted texture that represents the beauty of this Mexican flower.
In the tradition, the flower is an important element in the Day of the Dead altars; it is often scattered, and as it withers, it creates the path for the deceased to return and enjoy a brief moment in the world of the living.
For Lorena Saravia, translating these cultural elements into a design was a lot of fun. In her words: "It was a dress that came from beyond, returning for a day to be here. Mexico is a magical country where we find cultural heritage of all kinds..."
