How Was Xel-Há Formed? The History of This Natural Wonder

August 12, 2025

Discover the story behind one of Mexico’s most incredible natural water parks!

Did you know that Xel-Há wasn’t always the Natural Wonder we know today? This extraordinary place has a history that goes back centuries. The Mayan language gives Xel-Há its meaning, “where the water is born.” Honestly, there couldn’t be a more fitting description.

Xel-Há was Cancun’s first aquatic attraction, accessible only by a narrow road to Tulum. It marks the final stretch of Sac Actun, the world's most extensive underwater river system. Over millions of years, natural erosion shaped its unique landscape, turning it into one of the Caribbean Sea's most majestic natural aquariums.

Historically, Xel-Há was a key commercial port for the native Maya people, valued for its access to the sea and the unique geological features of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Today, it remains a magical place where water and nature come together, now offering a day trip with adventure in an underground river, snorkeling, delicious food, and unforgettable experiences.

Where Is Xel-Há Located?

Xel-Há is located in the Riviera Maya, within the municipality of Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico, just a few minutes from downtown Tulum and only 9 km from the Tulum Archaeological Zone. Thanks to its proximity to the new Tulum International Airport and the Tulum section of the Maya Train, getting here is easier than ever.

If you’re wondering what makes Xel-Há so unique, let me tell you: this place is much more than a theme park. A vast cove—an entrance from the sea to the land—stretches nearly 1.5 km (0.9 miles).

The park spans 14 hectares (34 acres) of crystal-clear waters, home to over 90 fish species. Around it, 70 hectares (173 acres) of green jungle grow; this area is home to over 200 plant species. It feels like walking into a living, open-air museum!

This place was a highly important trading port for the native peoples of the region, thanks to its connection to the sea and the peninsula’s unique geological formations.

And for those wondering how it all began, here’s the story: Xcaret Park opened its doors in 1990, and just four years later, in November 1994, Xel-Há became the second park of Grupo Xcaret.

Xel-Há at Xcaret

“It all began when I requested that the Xel-Há project be presented to the State Congress. It was approved by the House of Representatives, and in 1994, we signed the concession agreement. Before the end of his term, the governor fulfilled his commitment by extending the contract for another 15 years. Years later, after renegotiating the terms, we managed to restart the timeline for an additional 30 years, which guarantees us this Natural Wonder until 2033.”

This story is part of the book “Xueños” by architect Miguel Quintana Pali, where he shares how Xel-Há became part of Xcaret.

What makes Grupo Xcaret truly special is that it's a proudly 100% Mexican company, founded with a purpose you can feel in every corner of its parks: to make the planet a happier place by sharing its deep love for Mexico.

Our vision is clear: to be one-of-a-kind in sustainable tourism and recreation.

At Grupo Xcaret, it's not just about creating unforgettable experiences—we’re driven by a deeper purpose that goes far beyond tourism. One of our most important goals is to be a regenerative organization: not only protecting the environment, but actively improving and restoring it.

With that vision in mind, Xcaret began taking action in 1995 to protect the natural beauty of Xel-Há. That dedication paid off—Xel-Há became the first park in the world to receive EarthCheck Certification, an international recognition that validates our commitment to the planet. EarthCheck is a globally recognized organization that monitors and certifies tourism-related activities to ensure they align with strong environmental and social sustainability standards. Developed by Australia’s Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism, it is considered one of the most rigorous certification systems in the world.

But we didn’t stop there. In 2023, we reached a new milestone by earning the EarthCheck Master Certification—once again becoming the first park in the world to achieve it. This only reinforces what we’ve always believed: when you act with love, consistency, and respect for nature, the results will follow.

Each year, Xel-Há conducts population studies of queen conchs in its inlet. Between 2011 and 2012, several of them were fitted with tracking chips to better understand their movements—not only within the inlet, but also toward the sea. Today, the population is estimated at around 331 individuals.

To help keep marine populations healthy and stable, it’s essential to use eco-friendly products and respect marine life in its habitat—avoid touching animals or removing them from the water. Learn about closed seasons and protected species, and avoid purchasing products made from them. For example, do not buy conch shells as souvenirs or consume conch meat.

Xel-Há is part of “The 13 Natural Wonders of Mexico.” That’s right—a recognition it earned thanks to its incredible biodiversity, beauty, and the unique tranquility you can only experience here.
