It is not a secret that in Xcaret there are cultural activities that will make you fall in love even more with Mexico, but very few know that there are workshops included in your admission that you can do during your visit. One of them is the Wool Workshop, located in the Mayan Village, next to the Cemetery.

This workshop lasts 45 minutes per session, and you can do it at different times, either in the morning or in the afternoon. There are two separate sessions: “Make your own loom” and “Dye with natural pigments” both very relaxing, recommended if you want to do a different activity.

Make your own loom

In this session, you will learn that the collective work of spinning and weaving is a heritage of many of the indigenous peoples of Mexico. You can take it without extra cost at 12:00 and at 17:00 hours.

1.- Combing the wool

You will learn different techniques that have been used for centuries to comb the yarn, it is much more sophisticated than it seems! It requires strength and speed to be effective.

2.- Spinning techniques

Once the wool is combed, it has to be spun so that it is in the shape of yarn, as we know it commercially. In the Wool Workshop, you will learn two different techniques, one older than the other.

3.- How to knit with the Loom of Waist

The instructor will give you a demonstration of how the weaving is done with the waist loom, an activity only suitable for the most expert. It is impressive since the whole body is used to weave, but the result is beautiful.

4.- To make your own loom

The favorite part of the most creative visitors! At the end of the session, you can choose three different colors of yarn to create your own loom.

With the help of the instructor, you will learn how to make a real fabric that you can take home as a souvenir. It is a very relaxing activity, perfect to disconnect from stress. If you do not finish knitting at that moment, you can take your material to do it later.

Stains with natural pigments

If you are interested in learning how the dyes that were used for several centuries in Mesoamerica, and that transcended to our present time, you have to attend this session of the Wool Workshop in Xcaret. You can take it without extra cost at 10:00 and at 4:00 p.m.

Inside the workshop you will see different packaged ingredients as if they were for cooking, you will learn what each one is for.

5.- The raw cochineal serves as the basis for making natural pigments

All the natural dyes are made from grana cochineal, the instructor will explain in detail how it works and the process that must be carried out to create them.

6.- The cempasúchil flower serves to make yellow pigment

All Mexicans know the cempasúchil flower for the Day of the Dead. But in addition to being representative of this beautiful tradition, it also serves to the pigment in yellow tones.

7.- The Palo de Brasil is used to make red pigments

If you are a lover of plants in the home, surely you have or have seen the Palo de Brasil, one that has a thick trunk and large leaves, well here you will learn that it also serves to the pigment in reddish tones.

8.- The wild indigo is used to make blue pigments

This plant, besides having medicinal properties and giving a beautiful blue flower, serves to dye in blue tones.

9.- Potassium alum serves as a fixative for pigments

They will explain to you that potassium alum, besides being a crystalline salt of slight flavor between sweet and astringent, is also the secret ingredient that fixes natural pigments.

10.- Apply the pigments on fabric

Finally, you can take home a souvenir. Whether you use a stamp or write with a stick, you will apply a natural dye on a blanket book separator.
